How to Get Yourself Back in Shape Post Baby

Congratulations! You have a new baby! Pregnancy was exciting, your new baby is captivating, and you are ready to get back in shape. Pregnancy undoubtedly added pounds to your body; however, with time and patience you can indeed regain your shape.

Take it slow

Remember, pregnancy was a long nine months. Just like it took time to put on your weight, it will take time to take it off. Get your groove back – set small goals with a long range perspective. This isn’t the time for crash diets or workout marathons. Being a new mom is a full time job and baby needs your full attention. Be patient and you will be surprised how quickly your body will be back in shape.

Nurse your baby

Nursing is one of nature’s built-in ways to help a new mom lose pregnancy weight. Nursing burns lots of calories, and there is a link between breastfeeding and successful weight loss after pregnancy. Moms who nurse achieve pre-pregnancy weight more quickly than those who bottle feed their babies.

Lots of water

Drinking an adequate amount of water is the best way to begin flushing out excess weight. It is easy to become dehydrated, especially if you are nursing your baby. A good guideline is to drink a full glass of water each time you nurse or bottle feed your baby.

Avoid the comfort food

With a new baby also comes lots of comfort food from friends and family. If possible, ask for low fat, high protein meals without accompanying desserts. If you find a high calorie meal in front of you from an affectionate aunt, eat a small portion and grab some fruit or raw vegetables to round it out. Take out food can also be a convenient comfort during this time; choose wisely, perhaps ordering a grilled chicken sandwich over a cheeseburger and skipping the fries.

Get a move on

Exercise is a key link between regaining your energy level and taking off weight. Walking briskly for just 30 minutes three to four times a week is an optimal way to take off weight. Put baby in the stroller and give him or her some fresh air too! If you are more adventurous, join your neighborhood gym and enlist your husband or a family member to stay with baby for an hour or so while you get a workout break. Exercise will help you feel mentally, emotionally and physically better.
