About Dr Terrence Scamp – Gold Coast Plastic Surgeon – a Master of his Craft!

Dr Terrence Scamp - a true master of his craft!

Meet Dr. Terrence Scamp he has experience as a Vascular, Orthopaedic, Neurosurgery and General Surgeon, and has one of the most well known plastic surgery clinics in Australia based on the Gold Coast called Esteem Day Spa.

I recently had the chance to sit down with Dr. Terrence Scamp in between his trip to New York and a recent snowboarding trip in Japan. Though he is one of Australia’s most renowned plastic surgeons he still manages to find the time to do the things that he enjoys (apart from work of course) which include travel and keeping fit. Having just received his scuba license in the Maldives (a new found hobby, moving on from his time doing martial arts due to injuries). He also keeps fit and healthy through weight training and stays relaxed with a good old fashioned game of golf.

Dr. Scamp who is originally from Brisbane and graduated from the University of Queensland (1980) underwent his internship at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. Two years after graduation he moved into surgical training and obtained experience in Vascular, Orthopaedic, Neurosurgery and General Surgery.

He commenced his specialised training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1986 at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, moving to Princess Alexandra Hospital in 1987 for a further year of training in plastic surgery.

From here he went on to spend 3.5 years abroad to further his training and work with some of the best surgeons in the field in Scotland, Bristol, Germany, London, Belgium, Slovenia and the U.S.A.

“I stayed on because I kept meeting interesting surgeons that I wanted to work with.” explained Dr. Scamp on his time overseas. Dr. Scamp explained his experience with his 6 months training under Dr. Frederick V. Nicol; a leading surgeon in the UK who ran a star studded practice that had a constant rotation of celebrities, rock stars and royalty through the practice, gave Dr. Scamp a lot of experience in face lifts.

With experience as a Vascular, Orthopaedic, Neurosurgery and General Surgeon, we asked Dr. Terrence Scamp what made him choose Plastic Surgery as his specialist field.

“The technicality of the profession and the ability to make a positive difference to someone’s life is what drew me to plastic surgery” explained Dr. Scamp.

Dr. Scamp clarified that his passion for plastic surgery started off with Microvascular surgery – which refers to the highly specialised skill in which tissue (such as skin, muscle, bone or a combination) is taken from one area of the body to reconstruct another.

Dr. Scamp explained his transition into performing plastic surgery was simple with the amount of training he had received overseas and through numerous years of study.

Opening his own clinic Esteem Day Spa at Marina Mirage on the Gold Coast allowed him to focus on the procedures he most enjoys performing. These procedures also happen to be the most sought out surgical procedures at his Esteem Clinic on the Gold Coast. They include breast augmentation, face rejuvenation (both surgical and non-surgical) and rhinoplasty. Dr. Scamp has been renowned as one of the best surgeons in Australia for these procedures.

For breast augmentations Dr. Scamp likes to match the correct implants with each individual, having one on one consultations before each procedure making sure the implants are individualised to each persons needs.

As for facial rejuvenation Dr. Terrence Scamp was one of the first surgeons in Australia to do non-surgical procedures. Being the first surgeon to conduct the first Anti-wrinkle injections injections in 1990, and he was included in the first trial group for the restylane (injectable fillers) in 1997.

With a team of nurse injectors and laser technicians he works with each client on the four different types of ageing when it comes to facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Scamp explains the four reasons why the face ages;

  • Expression lines
  • Sun Damage
  • Sagging skin via the ageing process of the skin
  • Tissue Atrophy – the breakdown of skin tissue

“When I’m working on a facial rejuvenation I like to look at all of these points – individualised again to the persons needs – And ask why is it ageing? And come up with a solution that we can do without an operation and/or with an operation.” explains Dr. Scamp.

And last but certainly not least Dr. Scamp refers to Rhinoplasty as a certain strategy combining a number of elements;

“I like art, I like design and I like science, Rhinoplasty combines all three of these.” said Dr. Scamp.

When asked why he believed plastic surgery was on the rise he answered with:

“Beauty is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Men are attracted to it and women want to achieve it”.

But before you run off and try and achieve it Dr. Scamp recommends that you check the qualifications of each surgeon. Do your research but don’t trust everything you read on the Internet.

“The problem with the internet is you can’t always trust the source.” explains Dr. Scamp.

Do your research, listen to people that have had procedures completed by those surgeons and check and double check the surgeons qualifications – Always Look for FRACS, ASPS, ASAPS and ISAPS.
