Meet Dr Naveen Somia, he is one of Australia’s most well-respected plastic surgeons based in Bondi Junction and Bella Vista in Sydney. Always at industry conferences and known for his precise and beautiful patient results, we had a chance to ask Dr Somia a few questions to get to know what motivates him, where he comes from, what his favourite procedures are and how he winds down with his french bulldog after a big day.
Your hobbies?
I have a young family and that keeps me very busy but when I do have some free time I like to read up on new technologies and thought leadership.
What is something unique about you?
I listen.
Where did you grow up?
In Coorg – in rural mountainous South India in a farming community known for its coffee plantations.
Where did you study?
I completed my medical degree in India and completed my plastic surgery training in Sydney, Melbourne and the US.
What inspired you to be a surgeon?
I believe I am an empathetic person and I wanted to use that quality in my career. Medicine seemed a good place.
When did you first start practicing as a plastic surgeon?
2006
Please tell us your most interesting experience with a plastic surgery procedure or patient.
There have been many over the years but one that comes to mind straight away was a 6 year old girl who had her arm amputated in a lawn mower accident which we were successfully able to restory and maintain most of her function.
What has been your biggest career milestone to date?
Being elected as the President of The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Surgeons
You perform many different cosmetic surgery procedures, which is your favourite and why?
Eyelid surgery and breast reduction surgery because they both make a massive difference in the how the person perceives themselves.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Helping people.
How do you wind down/relax after a big day?
I love to play with my kids and my french bulldog.
What advice would you give someone looking to undergo major cosmetic surgery?
It is extremely important for everyone to spend considerable time researching to see if the procedure is right for them and find the right plastic surgery who can deliver the results they desire.
Do you provide support for patients after surgery?
Yes, we love to see our patients again wherever they are in their journey and provide support where needed.
