We love getting to know our plastic surgeons on a more personal level. It helps to see they’re only human after all! Dr Marcus Pyragius, Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon based in Adelaide, is a highly respected and skilled surgeon with loads of happy patients and we managed to sit down and have a chat with him and see what makes him tick.
Dr Pyragius grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, so besides being into fitness, he loves to visit Adelaide’s famous wine regions such as the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. “I also love dining out,” he tells us. “Adelaide has some amazing restaurants!”
Married with an eight year old son, Dr Pyragius says he was always a very driven and determined individual. “When I was 15 years of age, I did work experience with a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. After witnessing the work he carried out, I was inspired to pursue a career in surgery.” What an amazing choice for work experience!
Born from his desire to help people, Dr Pyragius says that surgery was an area that allowed him to develop skills where he could make a life changing difference to individuals, in both aesthetic and reconstructive terms. “My most memorable operation would have to be my first major reconstructive procedure that I performed as the leading surgeon. It was a procedure which involved the transfer of back tissue to cover an ankle wound using microsurgery. This was my first introduction to the immense responsibility that comes with being a surgeon.”
However, Dr Pyragius says his biggest career milestone was when he moved to his current practice in North Adelaide, “… to share rooms with the Plastic Surgeon who I had initially undertaken work experience with when I was 15 years of age.” We think that’s amazing! That’s what you call fulfilling your dreams…
Dr Pyragius performs many different cosmetic procedures. He says he enjoys them all, however, “Breast surgery is a sub speciality interest of mine. This ranges from breast reconstructive surgery following breast cancer, through to cosmetic breast surgery including breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift surgery. Another major area of interest of mine includes abdominal contouring surgery. Both of these areas of surgery result in a high level of patient satisfaction and gratitude, which provides me with an immense amount of reward.”
Talking about rewards, Dr Pyragius says the best part of his job is the amount of gratitude and appreciation he receives each day from his patients. “That is by far the most fulfilling aspect of my job. The challenge it provides me with each and every day gives me an tremendous amount of satisfaction.”
Dr Pyragius’ patients talk about his caring and empathetic nature. This is also why he provides such excellent pre and post operative care. “In the initial consultation with patients, I discuss the surgery and postoperative period in great detail. In this consultation, I outline what they should expect, along with the support that I will provide them with throughout the whole process. I review my patients regularly and guide them accordingly following surgery. I make them aware that I am available and readily contactable to answer any of their questions or concerns.
“Providing my patients with the appropriate and required support following a procedure is imperative and something that I hold in high regard. I pride myself on developing a trusting relationship with my patients, one in which they feel they can call upon me at any stage through the process.”
When he’s not changing people’s lives, Dr Pyragius also enjoys watching the football and cricket.
