Emotional Benefits of Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery

Emotional Benefits of Plastic Surgery

Quality Plastic Surgery can help improve your Self Esteem and Emotional Well-being.

Quality plastic surgery has emotional benefits and demand has been steadily increasing. It is well known that people choose plastic surgery for varied reasons that might include improving their appearance, fixing a condition, or maybe reconstructive surgery to name but a few.

Intuitively though we have long suspected that there are emotional benefits, including increased self-esteem that results from having had quality plastic surgery.  Now however, a new study has confirmed that this is a reality and that one reason an increased number of people might be opting for plastic surgery is specifically to improve their self-esteem.

“quality plastic surgery can result in people experiencing greater joy in life, greater self-esteem, and a higher sense of life satisfaction.”

A new study published in the USA journal “Clinical Psychological Science” reports that quality plastic surgery can result in people experiencing greater joy in life, greater self-esteem, and a higher sense of life satisfaction.  The study group of over 800 people included first-time patients, people who have wanted to have plastic surgery but never proceeded, and people who have never contemplated plastic surgery.  Within the group everyone had similar initial levels of mental health and overall life satisfaction.  The study found that only a small percentage, (12%) of those who had had or were contemplating plastic surgery had expectations that the surgery would completely transform their lives.  The study did find however that whilst the above unrealistic expectation was not common, the reality was that a significant proportion of patients did experience an overall increase in self-esteem after surgery.

One lady that we recently interviewed echoed the findings of the above study. Her story might be familiar to some of us who have been morbidly obese in the past and who, after achieving significant weight loss have then found themselves with a lot of loose skin. She was a 38 year old mother weighing over 130kg when she realised that losing weight was not an option but an imperative. With absolutely no knowledge of nutrition she taught herself everything there was to know about the subject and then over two (2) years lost in excess of 60kg thru diet and exercise. Her advice is profound. “Eat for weight loss and exercise for health.”

Some three (3) years after the weight loss however she began to experience infections under the folds of her skin. It was then that she began to consider plastic surgery. As she explained, the initial decision to have plastic surgery to remove the loose skin was a medical decision and not related to any negative emotions that she may have been feeling. To her surprise however the plastic surgery not only cured her skin problem but resulted in added emotional benefits. She no longer felt compelled to wear loose flowing clothes to hide her loose skin but could now put on a pair of jeans and feel good in them. As she explained, it was not about trying to look good in a bikini but simply feeling good about her-self in both normal casual wear as well as in feminine clothes.

“it was not about trying to look good in a bikini but simply feeling good about her-self in both normal casual wear as well as in feminine clothes.”

People may opt to have plastic surgery for many varied reasons as outlined at the beginning of this blog. Whatever these reasons are however, there can be no doubt that quality surgery will result in improved emotional well- being.

One of the biggest reasons people have plastic surgery is because they want to feel better about themselves, but at the end of the day, surgery will only get you so far. We’re going to look at a few other things you can do that will send your self-confidence through the roof and it will boost the benefits you get from having any cosmetic surgery procedure. When you come out of the operating room you really will feel like a new person, but it’s never too early to start becoming a better version of yourself right now.

1. LOOK AFTER YOUR TEETH

I think some people realize how important a white smile is and they take care of their teeth every day, but there are others out there who are too lazy to even brush their teeth. If your teeth are looking a little yellow you should get them whitened and once they look fantastic you shouldn’t let them go back to looking dirty and discolored. You’re having surgery performed to boost your confidence, but you will feel less confident if you have horrible-looking teeth.

2. BUY A NEW WARDROBE

benefits of plastic surgeryThis is the only thing on the list you’ll be able to carry out without much effort as long as you have enough money to buy new clothes, but since you’re paying for surgery I’m guessing you have a little savings hidden away. When you start wearing new clothes you instantly feel more attractive and it shows because people will be able to sense your self-confidence from a mile off. You can always leave this until you come out of surgery instead of jumping in your car and going shopping now.

3. EXERCISE GENTLY & GO TO THE GYM

benefits of plastic surgeryWhen I say you should go to the gym I don’t mean you should run on a treadmill for hours each day. You should actually perform resistance training because this is how you will end up with toned muscles that wrap tightly around your skin when you lose weight. Even performing a selection of bodyweight exercises is enough to see results. Remember to start exercising before your surgery because you mightnot be able to step into a gym for a while once you’ve had your procedure done.

4. START EATING HEALTHY FOOD

By losing a lot of weight your breasts will now stand out even more, but in order to do that you’ll need to start eating a healthy diet. The average American diet is terrible and we eat far too much food, but an easy way to speed up weight loss is by cutting out carbohydrates. By cutting out an entire food group you don’t actually need unless you’re an athlete you’ll find it easy to eat less calories per day.

5. GET A NICE SUN TAN

benefits of plastic surgeryDo you ever wonder why people look a lot more attractive when they’re on holiday? It’s not because you’re looking at them through beer goggles and it’s only partly because they’re usually wearing less clothing, but the real reason is because they have a sun tan. If it’s not hot where you live you could always visit one of the many tanning salons to get your skin looking nice and brown. As a rough estimate it will make your look around 10% more attractive so it’s worth it.

ADD THEM ALL TOGETHER

You’re having cosmetic surgery because you want to feel better about yourself, but do you realize how much better you’ll feel if you carry out all the extra stuff we’ve spoken about today? If you want your life to be better than ever before I’d start getting to work right now.

In its core, the whole she-bang about plastic surgery revolves around one key concept – self esteem. Women who are willing to go under the knife understand the risks involved and have carefully weighed the scale of pros and cons. But to a special clientele, this is more than just looking good and feeling better. It’s revenge.

Payback Time

Recent divorcees who seek to have their bodies altered are actually greater in number compared to the more popular soon-to-be brides or ‘bridalplasty.’ According to Michael D. Cohen, head of the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland, various women come in to inquire about possible surgeries before and after a divorce to ultimately lighten them up and make them feel better. Cohen mentioned a recent breast augmentation surgery for a 20 year old woman, stating that the client did it as a “sort of payback” in her own words.

Lisa Hanson, an accountant from the Altrincham in Chesire, United Kingdom, was 40 years old when she saw her husband with another woman. After the divorce, she was scheduled for a tummy tuck and liposuction.

“The surgery was very much a reaction to my divorce — I wanted to re-invent myself and get my revenge after the way my ex made me feel about myself,” said Hanson. Now, this single woman has lengthened her list of surgery procedures undertaken with new breasts implanted, Anti-wrinkle injections on her cheeks, and extended nails.

“To all these seemingly excessive operations, Hanson tells us the reason. With each procedure, I felt my confidence increasing. I have never felt so unattractive and hurt as I did the morning my husband sat me down and told me that he’d met someone else.”

The Price to Pay

This is the new trend in the plastic surgery world. Newly divorced women have created a market so niche yet so lucrative that special ‘divorce packages’ were created just to attract them. These nifty packages, only available for the recently brokenhearted, offer small discounts to those looking for post-divorce surgery.

However, many experts believe that before women go under the knife, they should go under psychiatric treatment. Because of the stress brought about by the breakup, the mind is being in an unstable state; therefore many rash decisions could be made. Not to dismiss the concept of boosting self esteem during this lowest of times, though. Phil Haeck, the president of the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) notes that in the most ideal of cases, plastic surgery and cosmetic operations grant newly single clients that extra drive to enter the relationship market which most divorcees totally veer away from.

“There may be subtle things that happen in terms of their openness to talking to strangers,” added Haeck. For cases such as these, plastic surgery helps the patient increase self-worth and serve as the much needed push to get back on the horse, leaving the bad relationship behind.

Have you gone under the knife? What were your reasons for doing so? We’d love to hear about YOUR experiences.
