LED (Light Emitting Diodes) treatments are one of the fastest growing treatments for skin rejuvenation. Used before and after surgery to enhance procedure results, as well as for stand-alone treatments, light treatments are being embraced by surgeons, clinics and practitioners all over the country. Dr Mark McGovern, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from Vie Institute on the Sunshine Coast spoke to us about why they are loving the HeaLite II LED treatments before and after surgery, and why their results are so awesome.
What is LED?
LED light is a form of electromagnetic radiation with varying wavelengths of light that penetrate and are absorbed by the skin cells and tissues stimulating several benefits for the skin including:
- Increase in oxygen and blood flow to promote collagen production and release toxins;
- Improves skin elasticity leading to reduction in fine lines and wrinkles;
- Helps to repair sun damage to skin;
- Improves skin tone and clarity by normalising cellular imbalances;
- Helps with sensitive and inflammatory conditions such as acne, psoriasis, rosacea and eczema;
- Great for laser after care treatment to minimise redness;
- Increases hydration;
- Stimulates acupuncture points and immune response.
Why is it so great for before and after surgery?
All of the processes above mean after LED treatment your skin is healthier and able to better heal itself after any trauma including surgery. Dr McGovern says, “Using LED treatments in the first 2 – 3 weeks post-surgery has been shown to significantly reduce healing time by half. LED will also help reduce pain, oedema (swelling) and erythema (redness).”
Studies have shown that skin cells grow 150% – 200% faster when exposed to the correct wavelength of LED light. It triggers biological changes that repair the skin at a cellular level and result in glowing, rejuvenated, healthy skin.
While results can be seen after the first treatment, a series of treatments are usually recommended to suit the individual patient. With regards to pre and post surgery, Dr McGovern recommends a series of 3 treatments in the 10 days prior to any cosmetic surgery. He also suggests, “For optimal recovery and results post-operative treatments are ideally given within the first 2 weeks following surgery.”
LED Therapy is suitable for all skin types, however the number of treatments required can vary with skin type and condition. It does not contain any harmful ultraviolet wavelengths so cannot damage the skin tissue.
