It’s only a very fortunate few of us who go through life never giving a second thought about our weight. While some people struggle to gain weight, for most it’s a constant battle to keep it off. For those who actually finally do lose the weight, the journey is often not over. After any substantial amount of weight loss, the skin and tissues often lack the elasticity to conform to the newly reduced body size. Droopy, loose folds of skin can make you feel less attractive than when you were considerably overweight. Body contouring after massive weight loss can be a whole new journey in itself.
Sydney Plastic Surgeon Dr Jake Lim is a highly experienced plastic surgeon who sees many MWL patients each year to enhance body contour, reduce and tighten excess fat and skin, and add volume where necessary. Dr Lim’s MyKlinik practice offers a large range of services that combine 21 years of surgical experience with compassionate care in a warm and inviting environment. Dr Lim says it is vital to “take time to explain in detail to each and every patient all aspects of the cosmetic plastic surgery procedure they are considering.”
Surgical body contouring following major weight loss involves removing excess sagging skin and fat while improving the shape of the underlying support tissue. The result is a better proportioned appearance with smoother contours. Body contouring surgery is aimed to improve various body areas, such as the upper torso and arms, the waist, abdomen, buttocks and thighs.
Some of the procedures you might consider after MWL are:
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
- Brachioplasty (arm lift)
- Belt lipectomy, circumferential lipoplasty (total body lift)
- Mastopexy (breast lift)
- Breast Reduction
- Thighplasty (thigh lift) – Removes extra skin and fat from the thigh improving the contour of the thigh and buttocks area.
- Liposuction
Dr Lim says it’s important to evaluate the patient’s overall medical condition, assess any potential co-existing medical conditions that may affect the proposed procedures, identify the patient’s concerns and goals and create a plan. Often, patients will require multiple procedures. Some may be combined into the one surgery, but often there will be a need to go back for more than one surgery.
It is important for weight loss patients to achieve weight stability prior to proceeding with any body contouring procedures. Ideally, patients should be weight stable for a minimum of 12 months. This is important because weight fluctuations, both gain or loss, can affect the aesthetics of body contouring procedures. This can lead to poorer outcomes, and increase the incidence or need for secondary procedures.
Dr Lim also believes the key to a successful procedure is to closely monitor and followup with patients afterwards, taking as much time as required to answer any questions patients may have and ensuring their journey from beginning to the end of the process is as smooth as possible.
